Taking the road SS114, we will first stop in Savoca, a picturesque medieval village that also bears traces from the Renaissance and Baroque ages. The village is today included in the list “The nicest villages of Italy”, and is also the place where the most important Sicilian shootings took place. Walk into the “Bar Vitelli”, owned in the fiction by Apollonia’s father, where Micheal Corleone asked for Apollonia’s hand in marriage.
We will continue toward Forza d’Agrò, where scenes from “TheGodfather II” were shot and from where you will enjoy beautiful views of the Ionian coast including Taormina, Mount Etna and the Strait of Messina. Forza d’Agrò is also the place that we recommend if you want to have a delicious and generous lunch, since it enjoys an extremely good reputation among food and wine lovers.
On our way back, we will stop in Piazza Armerina, an ancient medieval village with a remarkable Baroque and Norman old town. Its municipality includes the Villa Romana del Casale (entrance fees not included); a UNESCO heritage site since 1997, the villa is decorated with magnificent, worldwide-known and extremely well-preserved mosaics that today attract thousands of visitors with a passion for history and art.
